What is counselling?
- Individuals, couples and families working with a professional towards resolving difficulties affecting family life;
- Counselling is a useful way of finding solutions which reduce emotional and relationship stresses and prevent family breakdown.
Who can use the counselling service?
- Any individual, couple or family who feels that some situation is either:
- threatening family breakdown
- causing emotional or relationship stresses
- making it hard to function properly
- Anybody living in Corryong, Walwa and the surrounding district.
Who else can contact a counsellor?
- Any individual or family member.
- A professional or concerned person can ring to discuss whether it would be useful to offer a family or individual this service. (The decision to use a counsellor will ultimately be made by the family).
What happens then?
- Appointments are available from Monday through to Thursday. At this time it is jointly decided whether ongoing counselling, a referral elsewhere or simply this single consultation would be most helpful.
- If other people or professionals are involved in the situation the counsellor may, with permission, meet with them.
Counsellors are?
Qualified psychologists or social workers who also have specialist training and experience in family therapy.
What else can a counsellor do?
Refer you to a service which might be appropriate for you or your family.
Help facilitate groups and community projects which can be useful for families experiencing difficulties.
