Welcome to our Web Site.

The origins of this health service date back to 1897 when plans to build the Corryong Cottage Hospital were conceived.  Five years later the foundation stone was laid for what then became known as the Victoria Cottage Hospital.  In 1916 the foundation stone of the present hospital was laid.  Over the years, the number of acute beds rose to its peak of forty-two in the 1960s, and on 5th November 1983, the Upper Murray Nursing Home, a 20-bed high care facility, was opened.

In the early 1990s the Agency took the opportunity to apply to be funded under the MPS Program.  This was to enable a more flexible service to be developed outside of the proposed Casemix funding model.

On 15th June 1995, the Agency was renamed Upper Murray Health & Community Services (UMH&CS), and from 1st July 1995, commenced operating as a Multi Purpose Service (MPS).

In October 1996 construction of a 15-bed hostel, 20-bed nursing home, and refurbishment of the acute hospital, were completed.  The new buildings were officially opened on 18th April 1997, and they have been an essential element in the restructuring of work practices, efficiencies and flexibility.

The use of flexible funding has enabled the development of an extensive range of primary health and community support services. In 1999 Upper Murray Health & Community Services included the Corryong Medical Centre under its auspice and in 2000 established a Health & Fitness Centre, initially on site, and later in the Central Business District under the management of a community committee.

Upper Murray Health & Community Services operates subject to the Health Services Act and Regulations, and the Objects and By-Laws of the Agency.
